{"id":50,"date":"2011-04-13T03:52:22","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T10:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lizardwiki.dyndns.org\/blog\/?p=50"},"modified":"2011-04-13T03:52:22","modified_gmt":"2011-04-13T10:52:22","slug":"scanning-for-radiation-week-3-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/fastlizard4.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/13\/scanning-for-radiation-week-3-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Scanning for Radiation: Week 3 Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, finally, I have downloaded, analyzed, and posted the first data from my experiment for the world to see and use!<\/p>\n<p>But, first, take a look at these notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have not yet, make sure you read the <a title=\"Scanning for Radiation - LizardBlog\" href=\"\/blog\/2011\/03\/19\/scanning-for-radiation\/\">original blog post of the series<\/a> for the background information on the experiment.<\/li>\n<li>Please be aware that <strong>I am not an expert on radiation<\/strong>. \u00a0Although I have tried to make the experiment as scientifically rigorous as possible, please handle my results accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>The computer measured the radiation hitting the collector every thirty seconds. \u00a0Therefore, each datapoint corresponds to the amount of radiation detected per thirty-second interval (counts per thirty seconds).<\/li>\n<li>For some reason, the computer stopped collecting data at\u00a0146.633333 hours. \u00a0The next datapoint afterwards is at t=282.979167, which is not representative of when I restarted data collection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Secondly, I welcome reuse and reanalysis of my results by others. \u00a0They are licensed under the CreativeCommons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license (see <a title=\"LizardWiki:Copyrights - LizardWiki, FastLizard4's wiki and website\" href=\"\/wiki\/LizardWiki:Copyrights\" target=\"_blank\">LizardWiki:Copyrights<\/a> for details). \u00a0The original data is available in a few formats. \u00a0You can download the original data <a title=\"Download:Radiation scan results\/Week 3 - LizardWiki, FastLizard4's wiki and website\" href=\"\/wiki\/Download:Radiation_scan_results\/Week_3\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Note that, although not necessary, I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you reuse\/reanalyze my data (although you do need to get my explicit permission if you wish to reuse my data for commercial purposes).<\/p>\n<p>So, with that out of the way, let&#8217;s get on with the analysis of the results:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wiki\/File:Radiation_scan_experiment_week_3_results_histogram.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Histogram of results\" src=\"\/w\/images\/thumb\/8\/8e\/Radiation_scan_experiment_week_3_results_histogram.png\/240px-Radiation_scan_experiment_week_3_results_histogram.png\" alt=\"Histogram of the results of the experiment, displaying a bell curve\" width=\"240\" height=\"122\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Histogram of the results of the experiment<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the time I downloaded the data to my flash drive (before going on spring break) on Friday, April 8th, 2011, the experiment had been running for exactly three weeks (more or less). \u00a0As indicated by a histogram of the data (see image at right), the data I collected is representative data, since the histogram displays &#8211; as expected &#8211; a bell curve. \u00a0Interestingly, the mode of the dataset according to the histogram is 10 counts per thirty seconds, the same as the median of the dataset.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"\/wiki\/File:One_hour_sample_of_radiation_scan_results.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"One hour graph excerpt from results\" src=\"\/w\/images\/thumb\/2\/26\/One_hour_sample_of_radiation_scan_results.png\/240px-One_hour_sample_of_radiation_scan_results.png\" alt=\"One hour graph excerpt from results\" width=\"240\" height=\"122\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">One hour graph excerpt from results.  Note the variance in the graph.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At this point I feel that it is important to emphasize that, beyond the histogram, this data cannot really be analyzed by eye. \u00a0Take a look at the graph to the right. \u00a0Note the fluctuations in the graph. \u00a0At first glance, you probably wouldn&#8217;t be able to see a trend in the graph. \u00a0This is why it&#8217;s necessary to use computer software to analyze the data, because &#8211; especially when viewing larger portions of the graph &#8211; the data fluctuates so much that it&#8217;s nigh impossible to pick out trends in the data by eye.<\/p>\n<p>To analyze the data, I asked the data collection program &#8211; <a title=\"LoggerPro 3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vernier.com\/soft\/lp.html\" target=\"_blank\">Vernier LoggerPro 3<\/a> (of which I conveniently have a copy installed on my home computer) &#8211; to draw a linear fit through the data and perform a basic statistical analysis of the data. \u00a0Note that I have made an important assertion here: That the trend is a linear trend. \u00a0I have not taken into account the possibility that the trend is actually non-linear (parabolic or what-have-you);
