The LizardNet Minecraft servers need help!

Hosting Minecraft servers is expensive.

Minecraft is rather resource intensive. With three or four people logged in, server s2 draws over a gigabyte of RAM. A lot of disk capacity is also required, not just to save the world, but also in throughput as chunks are saved to disk and read back off. And, of course, there's the CPU power of things like terrain generation and decoration, and the bandwidth of communicating all of the necessary data to and from the players.

Though I am no longer a student and thus work full time now, running servers is still an expensive proposition, so I still welcome and appreciate any support you're willing to give, though such support is not urgent and it's not like the servers will go anywhere if you don't donate.

How I will use your donations

The Minecraft servers I currently run are starting to exceed the capacity available to them on my overworked VPS. Lag is starting to get severe, for example. Saves take a long time when the server is busy, and it already has to host my website among other things.

I have bought a dedicated VPS to run the public LizardNet Minecraft servers. Currently, this is only s2, but will include the public PvP server we are planning to start. The private servers, like c1 and s1, will continue to be run on the machine that currently runs them. But renting a new VPS costs money, and this is where you come in - funds you give me will be spent only on the monthly cost of hosting the VPS dedicated to the public Minecraft servers - nothing more. I will not use them to pay for any other servers I currently operate, or any servers I buy in the future that won't be dedicated to the public LizardNet Minecraft servers. Nor will I use the money for any personal expenses. If I have more in donations than the monthly bill, I will save the excess for the next month's bill.[1]

My servers are hosted by Linode, whom I find to be an excellent provider. They have great customer support, great packages, and great hardware - so I'm inclinded not to leave them. At this time, I am looking into a single Linode 1024 VPS to host the LizardNet public Minecraft servers:

If I have consistent donations that are more than what is required to pay for all the server(s), then I may choose to upgrade the existing server(s) even if not strictly necessary, to help guarantee the best possible gameplay experience.

What You Get

I'm afraid that donating won't give you too many benefits. You will get less lag on the server, faster response times, and so on. But, in the interest of fairness, you won't get any special treatment. We won't answer your support emails faster, we won't be more lenient on the rules with you, we won't guarantee whitelisting if you donate, we won't immediately grant every unban appeal, and so on. Donor or not, the LizardNet Minecraft operator teams will treat every user with respect and fairness - and this includes not giving preferential treatment to donors. But donating will help keep us running, providing the same quality administration and gameplay that we strive to provide every day.

But there do need to be some perks, right? Donors will get a green-colored name tag in-game, as well as a special mention both on the server information page but also on LizardNet Minecraft's Google+ and Facebook presences. It's not much, but I hope it's at least some incentive!

The green-colored nametag will turn your name green in the nametags that appear above your character in-game, as well as in the <Tab> players list and certain messages (though not in regular chat messages). Recurring donors will get this perk for as long as their subscription is active. Non-recurring ("one-time") donors will have their donation divided a third of the total operating costs of the dedicated LizardNet Minecraft servers (i.e., "Total cost per month" in the table above divided by three) at the time of their donation, and receive the green nametag for that many months, rounded up to the nearest whole number of months.

Note that the Yearly/Sand and Yearly/Netherrack recurring donations plans are not eligible for the green nametags, as they represent very small donations that, though anything helps, pay for very little server time.

Finally, everyone who donates - no matter how little - will get listed in the donor chart!

How to Donate

Important: Donations will be addressed to me (Andrew Adams) personally instead of an organization (this is because LizardNet is not legally incorporated). As such, your donation will not be tax-deductible or anything of that sort.

Equally important: There are NO REFUNDS OFFERED on donations to LizardNet Minecraft. All donations are considered final. If you initiate a dispute or chargeback against LizardNet Minecraft, your ability to donate will be permanently restricted.

Flattr

Flattr.svg

If you'd like to donate using Flattr microdonations to LizardNet Minecraft, just click the button to the right! Note that although funds donated to LizardNet Minecraft will still be treated the same as funds donated by another method and subject to the same restrictions (only used to pay for Minecraft servers, etc.), you will only get donor flair (green nametag) if you both donate $1 or more per month and if you somehow let me know your Minecraft username. If your donations falls below $1 per month, your nametag will be removed after one month, though I will try to inform you before this happens.

Good ways to let me know of your Minecraft username are to put it on your Flattr profile, or to send me an email at minecraft-support [at] helpdesk [dot] fastlizard4 [dot] org with your Flattr and Minecraft usernames.

If you don't provide your Minecraft username, you will be credited as "Flattr user: username" in the donor chart, unless you email me telling me you'd rather stay anonymous or you make your Flattr itself anonymous. In this case, you will be credited as "Anonymous Flattrer n" where n is a number that uniquely identifies you, but is not related to you.

Notes

  1. Important: For donations in a cyrptocurrency, I will either immediately exchange the coins for fiat currency and apply these restrictions to the fiat from the exchange, or offset the donation with an equivalent amount of fiat from my own personal holdings and apply the restrictions to that offset amount, thus applying the restrictions to your donation by proxy, or I will apply the restrictions to the coins directly if there is not yet a need for me to spend them.
