Think the ZNC is down? Status information is available on Icinga. |
Rav3nZNC is an IRC service administered by Rav3n and provided by the services of FastLizard4. The following page contains all the information you should require to obtain a ZNC, setting it up and commonly asked questions.
Contents
[hide]Requesting the ZNC
In order to request a ZNC, you will need to have the following prerequesites already in place:
- An IRC client software, such as mIRC
- A nickserv account for EACH server you wish to connect to.
- No bans currently against you.
- The approval of EACH server's Operator(s) to use a ZNC system. (Usually allowed by default, but worth checking)
You may also need to have access to at least one network approved by Rav3n personally. As of 23/10/2013, the approved networks (and the channels) are:
- irc.fastlizard4.org #Rav3nZNC
- irc.globalgamers.net #Rav3nZNC
- irc.freenode.net #Wikia-Metroid
(Other networks may be added on an individual basis, but must still contain at least one of the above networks)
Assuming you meet all the conditions above, you may join any of the channels above and look for either Rav3n or FastLizard4 to begin the setup.
When setting up, you will be asked to provide a username for your account. The username is case-sensitive and we recommend you keep it under 10 characters; the reasoning for this will become apparent later.
Logging in for the first time
Once setup is complete, you should see the ZNC account active on the channel you originally requested it for. You will also be given a temporary password which can be changed momentarily. Our servers support SSL connections and it is recommended that you connect in this way. In order to log into the webadmin - your primary port of call for customising your account and changing your password - you can go to http://fastlizard4.org:4746 for non-SSL or https://fastlizard4.org:4747 for SSL and use the username and password given to you.
When you log in, the first thing you should change is your password via "Your Settings". Like the username, this is also case-sensitive and can be as elaborate as you like. However under no circumstances may either your username or your password contain a colon (:), the reason for this will become apparent shortly.
Once you have changed your password, you can customise your settings as you see fit. However, the following settings must NOT be changed:
- Module: controlpanel - weird things can happen if this is disabled, so best leave it on.
- Module: perform - for some servers to work properly, this MUST be left on.
- Module: raw - leave off
- Module: send_raw - leave off
- Module: shell - leave off (anyone caught with this on will be warned or in extreme cases terminated)
- Network Info: Servers of this IRC network - while this can be added to, it is not recommended to change the original settings.
- Network: Name(s) - leaving this alone makes later steps easier in the long run.
By now, you have logged into the webadmin, changed your password and customised any other settings you wish to have. Once you're happy, its now time to actually connect to your ZNC through your client of choice.
Connecting to your ZNC
(This section was written with the assumption that the client is mIRC. Some steps may need to be adapted to suit your client)
Firstly, you will need to create a new server and assign the following details:
- Description: Whatever you wish to call it.
- Server: ridley.fastlizard4.org
- Port: 4746 for non-SSL, +4747 for SSL
Now this is where you need to put your ZNC password, but its not as straight forward as you may think. Assuming I'm on two servers, freenode and globalgamers, I would need to make a seperate server for EACH network with the same details as above. Its the password that tells the ZNC where to send you. As such, the password is in this format:
<username>/<network>:<ZNC_Password>
So to connect to both servers if my username is johnsmith and password as temppass, I would create 2 connections with the following passes:
johnsmith/freenode:temppass --- johnsmith/globalgamers:temppass
This will connect you to each server respecively. On each login, you will be shown our terms of use, which you abide by by using our services. A copy of it can be seen below.
Terms of Use
Welcome to the Rav3nZNC project. By using this ZNC, you agree to our terms and conditions.
They are as follows:
1) You will not use this ZNC for any activity that may be considered illegal by United States and/or your local laws (in the event of conflict, US laws take precedent).
2) You will abide by any and all additional terms and conditions applicable to the server you connect to.
3) Due to the nature of ZNCs, you will not use this ZNC for logging a channel for which the owner(s) explicitly say cannot be logged.
4) You will not share your ZNC account or its details with anyone, including Rav3nZNC admins; we have no need to ever access them. As such, Rav3nZNC staff will never ask you for your password.
5) If a channel/network admin allows logging, you will not keep extensive logs of a highly active channel that may affect the running of other users across the fastlizard4.org domain (it is possible to log these channels if a suitable cap is in place, default is 250).
6) In the event that your account is compromised, you must notify a Rav3nZNC administrator immediately.
7) You may only have one connection per network active at any time.
8) If an account is inactive for more than three months without a valid reason, it will be liable for immediate termination.
9) You will not use this ZNC to connect to a malicious network under any cirumstances. -*status- Failure to abide by any of these terms may result in a warning or, in extreme cases or multiple offenses, termination of your account. Furthermore, if a server's IRC Operator demands your account to be terminated with a valid reason, we will be obliged to follow their wishes.
Failure to abide by any of these terms may result in a warning or, in extreme cases or multiple offenses, termination of your account. Furthermore, if a server's IRC Operator demands your account to be terminated with a valid reason, we will be obliged to follow their wishes.
Assuming you agree to the above, we hope your enjoy our services.
Regards,
Rav3n

FAQ
- I've been banned from a server in the past. May I still join and connect to that server?
This depends on how serious the offence was and how recently it happened. We probably won't care about some minor misdemeanor that happened many years ago, but multiple and recent offenses may result in a rejection to use our services. Rav3nZNC and its staff work together with IRC Operators were possible to determine if users are viable for a ZNC account, but each case is different and will be decided on a per-user basis.
- I cannot authenticate to Nickserv via the Nickserv module!
Some IRC networks aren't compatible with the Nickserv module and require other means in order to authenticate your session (GlobalGamers is one such network). On the webadmin after you have logged in, you should see a perform button on the left menu for each network your ZNC is set up for. In here, you may type the commands you wish to be executed each time the ZNC joins the server, including your Nickserv authentication. Do not be alarmed that what you type will appear here in plaintext; no other user is able to see these commands.
